DR. & MRS. ALAN & DEBBIE SCHLESINGER

VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR

Native Clevelanders Alan & Debbie Schlesinger are worthy recipients of Bikur Cholim’s Volunteers of the Year award. After graduating from the Hebrew Academy’s Mesivta High School, Alan learned in Yeshiva Ohr Yerushalayim before returning home to earn a BS in chemistry from John Carroll University and a DDS from Ohio State. Despite operating a busy dental practice, Alan always finds time to assist the community at large, as well as individuals in any way he can. In addition to serving on the Hebrew Academy’s Board of Directors and his involvement in the Chevra Kadisha, Alan’s name is among the first mentioned when someone, anyone, is in need of help.

Debbie Schlesinger is (at least) Alan’s equal partner when it comes to helping those in need. Following her graduation from Yavne, Debbie attended Machon Devorah Seminary before returning home and earning her BS in accounting from Ohio State. Debbie has served as the PTA President at the Hebrew Academy, and is well known for her community involvement. Like Alan, she is at the top of the list of names of those ready to help whenever help is needed. Indeed, the Schlesinger home serves as a hotel, restaurant and simcha hall, where everyone is made to feel like part of the Schlesinger family.

We at Bikur Cholim are proud to honor Alan & Debbie as they represent the ideals on which Bikur Cholim was founded. In their own quiet and dignified fashion, Alan & Debbie are always available to provide whatever assistance they can to anyone in need. They do not ask questions; they take action. The manner in which they conduct their lives serves as a shining example to their eight children, four grandchildren (ken yirbu), and anyone who has the pleasure of meeting them. They, like Bikur Cholim, represent the best of Cleveland.

Over the years, Miriam sent him many patients and became a special person in his family. Bikur Cholim and Dr. Lever have continued that relationship.

MR. YAAKOV MOSHE MOSKOVITCH

YOUNG LEADERSHIP AWARD

Yaakov Moshe Moskovitch was raised in Brooklyn, New York, as part of a close-knit family of six. He witnessed ongoing chesed as a staple of life in his childhood home, and as a result of his upbringing, grew to view giving to others as an indispensable part of living. He attended the Klausenburg Cheder and Yeshiva, and later learned in Kiryat Sanz in Eretz Yisrael. While studying in Eretz Yisrael, Yaakov Moshe developed a close relationship with the Sanzer Rebbe, a connection he maintains to this day.

Currently, Yaakov Moshe is a key employee of Davis Caterers, an on-call member of Chaverim, and a steadfast Bikur Cholim volunteer. He is frequently seen at local hospitals, where he assists patients, provides Yiddish and Hebrew translation services, and refers out-of-town patients to the best doctors for their needs. Yaakov Moshe and his wife have opened their home to Bikur Cholim families in crisis, hosting them as guests every Shabbos and embracing them as members of their own family. His hope is that his children will imbibe the same values of chesed that he grew up with and will continue the family tradition of loving-kindness.
